Course Outline
Anatomy and physiology
In order to teach a safe and effective yoga class teacher training students must have a solid understanding of the main movement muscles. Students will be required to pass a written exam in Western anatomy at the end of the certification course.
The Eastern approach to anatomy will also be studied. This will include the study of the three energy bodies integral to the evolution of the spirit -- the causal body, the astral body (and its 19 elements) and the physical body. It will also include the study of kundalini energy, the five sheaths (koshas) contained within the three bodies (the food sheath, the vital sheaths, the mental/emotional sheaths, the intellectual sheath, and the bliss sheath).
Yoga Postures, locks and breathing techniques
The study of yoga postures (asanas) is a major focus of the Feel Good Yoga teacher training program. Students will study the alignment, cues, adjustment, sequencing, history and physical as well as emotional benefits to a wide variety of yoga postures.
The study of breathing techniques (pranayama) will include an overview of the mental and physical benefits of pranayama, different breathing patterns both correct and incorrect, and different pranayama practices such as alternate nostril breathing, lung cleansing, and victorious breath.
Yoga locks
Yoga locks (Bhandas) will be discussed as they apply to breathing techniques and the practice of yoga postures. We will explore the mula, uddiyana, and jalandhara bhandas.
History, philosophy and ethics of yoga
Yoga teacher trainees will study the eight limbs of yoga according to Patanjali. This will open the door to discussions about ethics as it is laid out by Patanjali and others. A special focus will be placed on the yamas and the niyamas.
The course will give a broad overview of the history of yoga with an extra focus on the birth of the various branches of yoga. Yoga teacher trainees will study sections of several of the ancient yoga scriptures (Yoga Sutras, Bhagavad-Gita, and the Upanishads).
Elements of a yogic lifestyle such as nutrition will also be discussed and yoga teacher trainees will gain insight into dealing in a non-judgmental way with the common difficulties yoga teachers sometimes face.
Meditation and mantras
Various meditation techniques such as concentration meditation, insight meditation, metta meditation and yoga nidra will be taught and students will have the opportunity to practice leading each other in their favorite form of meditation. Mantras will also be taught and practiced and yoga teacher trainees will learn how to incorporate mantras into their yoga classes.
Teaching methodology
Basic teaching principles such as class set up, voice intonation, principles of instruction, demonstration, observation, correction, pacing, and sequencing will be taught. Yoga teacher trainees will learn which postures are appropriate for beginner, intermediate, and advanced yoga classes and which yoga postures are inappropriate for people with specific illnesses and injuries.

Examination
Anatomy and physiology exam
In order to teach a safe and effective yoga class, yoga teacher training participants must have a solid understanding of the main movement muscles. Students will be required to pass a written exam in Western anatomy at the end of the course. Quizzes will be given out periodically so that students will have the opportunity to gradually learn the material. If students are unsuccessful upon first taking the written exam, they will have the opportunity to retake the exam.
Research project
Each student will be presenting a small research project on a yogi topic of their choice.
Mid-term stances
Half-way through the program all students are to present the fundamental asana stances. These fundamentals are described in the manuals and practiced throughout the program.
Practicum
Students will be required to teach one full hatha yoga class on their own. In order to pass their practicum, yoga teacher trainees will need to exhibit a certain degree of knowledge pertaining to yogic breathing, yoga postures, adjustments, modifications and necessary safety precautions. Any yoga teacher trainees who do not past the practical exam the first time will receive additional feedback and be given another opportunity.

Pursue thought;
put on a lined cape
and go outside
far from the silent houses, lit by lamps...
along the path, the gaze of the moon follows you.
The tangled branches
there in the snow
mark up the signs
of your thoughts.
